Sparta defeated Southampton 1-0 and advanced from the group stage after five matches. Furthermore, the win means Sparta win their group, ahead of Southampton, Hapoel and Internazionale.

None of the injured players was available, and David Holoubek was lucky that Lafata and Holek recovered from sickness just before the match. Matěj Pulkrab was also out of play, suspended after previous match against Hapoel.

Rodriguez failed in Southampton’s first chance of the match, missing the right moment for a shot after Clasie’s pass, and Michal Kadlec cleared the ball with a sliding tackle. And so it were Sparta to score. Dočkal chipped the ball over the defence from a free kick and Costa, unmarked, opened the score.

However, it was Southampton to set the pace, pushing Sparta to their box, but when they managed to beat the well-working defence, there was Koubek to save the day for the home side, making good saves on efforts by McQueen and Long.

Sparta were much more offensive in the second half, and could add their second from a number of good chances. But shots by Dočkal and Karavaev were saved by Forster and Mareček’s long-range shot just missed the goal.

Despite Southampton’s pressure, the visitors did not creaty any big chance in the second half. Van Dijk’s header went over the bar, shortly after Mazuch made a last-minute sliding tackle to clear a dangerous cross by Long. Thanks to a great defensive work, Sparta kept the score until the final whistle and could start the celebrations.
