Sparta will have to wait a bit longer for their first points in the Europa League group stage, after losing 0-3 in Southampton. Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez scored the goals for the home side.

Michal Sáček was the most surprising name in the line-ups, making his European debut with only 45 minutes played so far in the Czech top division. Martin Frýdek also returned to the squad.

However, the start was not good at all. After Costa’s handball in the box, Charlie Austin converted a penalty and gave the Saints an early lead.

After a couple of chances on both sides, it was Austin again. First, he beat Koubek with a header, but couldn’t celebrate, as he was caught offside. Two minutes later he was much more successful and made it 2-0 for Southampton.

Being aware of their lead, Southampton focused on defence in the second half and Sparta were struggling offensively. Forster made his only big save of the match on Lafata’s volley from the edge of the box.

In the additional time, Jay Rodriguez added Southampton’s third of the night after a lovely feed by Long from a counter attack.
