No Champions League for Sparta in this season, as a 0-2 away loss meant elimination from the competition’s third qualifying round.

Lukáš Vácha returned to the squad and played a centre midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation. Matějovský and Holek were out of play due to injuries.

Both teams were warming up slowly and it took some time for both keepers to make their first saves of the match. However, Stanciu then opened the score with a screamer after 31 minutes of play.

Steaua could widen the gap soon after the opener, but Tamás hit the bar with his clever lob over Bičík and Hamroun fired over the bar from a good scoring position.

Sparta had their biggest chance of the match late in the first half, but one of Steaua’s defenders cleared the ball right in front of Lafata, who was ready to level the score in front of the empty net.

Second half started the worst way possible. Hamroun failed in two chances, firing wide in the first and being denied by Bičík in the second one.

Jakub Brabec then saw his second yellow card and was sent-off and Stanciu scored his second of the night to seal the fate of the match.

After a 0-2 loss, Sparta were eliminated from the competition.
