Sparta’s journey in the MOL Cup ends in the round of 16. Baník were in lead twice, but Sparta managed to answer on both occasions. However, the penalty shootout decided Sparta were eliminated from the competition.

Andrea Stramaccioni gave chance to Vyacheslav Karavaev, Tal Ben Chaim played the first half as a right wing and David Lafata also returned to the starting eleven.

First half was, however, not good from the home side’s point of view. Baník threatened with chances of Poznar and De Azevedo, and eventually took the lead, as Hrubý opened the score with a header after a cross from the right.

Sparta struggled with beating Ostrava’s defensive line and Ben Chaim had the only chance of the first half, trying to find Šural with a low cross, but getting denied by Ostrava keeper Šustr.

More chances started to come in the second half. Štetina could level the score after Hovorka’s clever lob over the defence, but only forced Šustr to make a brilliant save, as well as Mareček and Michal Kadlec did minutes later.

Stramaccioni sent out Marc Janko as a sub, who turned out to be the key player on the way to reaching the equaliser. Néstor crossed the ball from the corner kick and Austrian striker headed it in to make it 1-1.

Despite the final pressure, Sparta could not score the game-winner in the final minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, it was Baník again to strike in the extra time, as Azatskyi headed it a cross from the right.

Sparta managed to answer right back early in the second half of the extra time, as Šural beat Šustr with an amazing scissor kick.

Pazdera and Hrubý on one side, and Šural with Janko on the other, were the first successful scorers in the penalty shootout. The third round decided, as Jakub Šašinka converted his penalty, while Néstor sent the ball high over the bar. The scenario repeated once again in the fourth round, Ondřej Šašinka scored and Karavaev miss decided the tie.
