Sparta got a goalless draw in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs against SonderjyskE, despite a much better performance in the second half.

Sparta started with exactly the same line-up as in the weekend’s match against Bohemians, the newest acquisition Vyacheslav Karavaev only started on the bench.

Both teams started the match off carefully, and it took the home side a while to create their first chance. Mazuch made a little mistake, lost the ball, but Guira only crossed to Koubek.

Sparta answered with two chances by Josef Šural, whose first shot got blocked and the other one went just wide. De Hende had the same success on the other side, hitting only Costa with his shot from a good scoring position. Bořek Dočkal’s redirected shot wen just over the bar in the last chance of the first half.

Tomáš Koubek made his best save of the night in the 65th minute, blocking a dangerous header by Dal Hende and keeping the score intact. On the other side, it was Šural to answer again, but his header went just wide of the post.

Sparta could not score the game-winner not even at the very end, when the home side visibly lacked energy, and so the first leg ends with a draw.
