Sparta earned three points Sunday night in a 2-0 win against a tough Slovan Liberec side. The game was the first of the spring campaign and the first official game for new signings Nicolae Stanciu, Guélor Kanga, and Florin Nita. The goals came from Stanciu and Kanga.

After only 5 minutes of play, the stadium erupted as Sparta took the lead. A poor clearance from Liberec fell right to Stanciu who was waiting at the top of the box. Without taking a touch, Stanciu blasted a hard right-footed shot to the bottom left corner to put Sparta up 1-0.

For the next 20 minutes, Sparta looked in control with a number of players looking dangerous. The midfield trio of Kanga, Stanciu, and Mavuba helped the team keep possession, and the attacking play from the wide players helped create Sparta’s chances in front of goal.

The half’s best chances came from two crosses into the box, one in the 17th minute and one in the 24th. Václav Kadlec nearly got on the end of both balls, but the Liberec defenders were right there with him to clear it away.

The next 20 minutes were more evenly matched. The remainder of the half was played in the midfield, with both sides struggling to keep possession and create chances.

Sparta seemed off to a good start in the second half, nearly finding Kadlec on the end of a cross in the 50th minute, but that would soon change.

After the first 20 minutes of the second half, the momentum of the game shifted. Liberec started creating dangerous chance after dangerous chance, as Sparta struggled to keep possession and regain control of the game.

Liberec nearly equalized in the 75th minute, when a cross into the box found Bosančić right in front of goal. He was able to turn and strike the ball on goal, but luckily he volleyed it right at Nita who caught the ball.

One minute later, Liberec would threaten the goal again, this time with Martin Frydek saving the ball off the goal line.

The Sparta defense was able to hold strong, and with only stoppage time remaining David Lafata was taken down in the box. Guélor Kanga stepped up to take the penalty, burying it in the bottom left corner.

The 2-0 win puts Sparta three points closer to the top of the table.
