Sparta earned one point Sunday night in a disappointing 1-1 tie against Zbrojovka Brno at home. After going down a goal off an unlucky deflection, Sparta managed to equalize off a header from Ondrej Zahustel. Although Sparta controlled most of the game and created a number of chances in the second half, they couldn’t find the winning goal.

Sparta’s starting line-up saw a few changes from the side that started against FC Slovácko last week. Semih Kaya and Costa made their first start together as a central back pair, and Michal Kadlec got the start at left back. Rio Mavuba also made a return to the starting line-up, and the young Václav Drchal got his second start after scoring last week on his debut.

The game’s first big chance came in the 11th minute, when Václav Drchal broke out on the dribble and managed to get a shot off near the middle of the box. Sparta had what looked to be another dangerous chance minutes later, when Václav Kadlec played a driven ball on the ground across the box to Kanga, but a Brno defender was there to make the stop.

Brno responded with their own dangerous attack in the 18th minute when Rafael Acosta managed to break through the Sparta defense on the dribble shot, but his shot was hit right at Nita for an easy save.

Six minutes later, Václav Kadlec got in behind the Brno defense on a through ball from Kanga, but his shot went just wide. The half’s best chance came in the 39th minute, when Kanga crossed the ball to a wide open Drchal right in front of goal, but his shot went high.

The opposing side scored the game’s first goal shortly after the start of the second half. A shot from the corner of the box by Martin Juhar took an unlucky deflection off of Ondřej Zahustel and put the ball out of reach for Florin Nita, making it 1-0.

Sparta would respond in the 61st minute, and it would be Zahustel getting one back for the home side. A great cross from substitute Bogdan Vatajelu found the head of Zahustel, putting Sparta back in the game at 1-1.

In the 68th minute, Brno defender Lukáš Krystüfek received a red card after what seemed to be a deliberate hand ball to stop an attack.

The last 20 minutes Sparta was on the offensive, putting tremendous pressure on Brno’s 10 men as they tried to find the winning goal. The team created several dangerous chances, with Ben Chaim getting in behind the Brno defense for a close chance in the 74th minute, and Vatajelu’s free kick just missing the goal minutes later. David Lafata nearly found the game winner when his header hit the crossbar in the 79th minute.

Despite Sparta having most of the play, Brno created a few dangerous opportunities on the counter. The most dangerous came in the 90th minute, when Florin Nita was asked to make a big save Hostující Sedlák got in behind the defense for a 1v1 opportunity.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
